China's phosphate and compound fertilizer industry has a large number of high-concentration production companies, but compared to international players, the country lacks strong, large-scale enterprise groups with global competitiveness. Experts are warning about the risks of overdevelopment in high-density phosphate and compound fertilizers.
This was the opinion shared by Wu Xiyan, President of the China Phosphate Fertilizer Industry Association, during the national annual meeting of the phosphate fertilizer industry held in Guiyang. According to recent data, there are more than 120 wet-process phosphoric acid plants in China, yet most of them operate on a small scale.
A joint research report by the China Phosphate Fertilizer Industry Association and the Ministry of Commerce highlights that domestic phosphate and compound fertilizers remain highly competitive in the local market due to the current regulatory framework and preferential policies. However, despite China's leading position in global phosphate fertilizer output, its overall international competitiveness ranks fifth, behind the U.S., Morocco, Russia, and Tunisia. This is largely due to the small size of many companies and their long-term reliance on government support.
Wu Xiyan pointed out that the current layout of China’s phosphate fertilizer industry remains unbalanced, with excessive development in high-concentration compound fertilizers being a major concern. He emphasized that blind investment and low-level redundant construction have become increasingly prominent. According to statistical analysis, existing production capacity and planned expansion under the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" have already exceeded agricultural demand. If this trend continues without rational regulation, future market competition could become extremely intense and inefficient.
The industry needs to focus on optimizing its structure, enhancing technological innovation, and building stronger international capabilities to ensure sustainable growth and long-term competitiveness.
