Commercial building fire in Prospect Heights, 6-20-23

**FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE** **June 20, 2023** **PROSPECT HEIGHTS —** On Tuesday, June 20, 2023, at approximately 12:37 p.m., the Prospect Heights Fire Protection District was called to a reported fire at 1209 N. Elmhurst Road in Prospect Heights. The incident began with heavy smoke billowing from the rear of a multi-tenant strip mall, quickly escalating into a serious fire that spread rapidly through the roof and interior. Upon arrival, firefighters observed significant smoke coming from the building’s rear and later confirmed flames and dense, dark smoke rising from the roof and upper levels. The structure, which houses 12 businesses, is located in a busy commercial area. Several nearby stores were also affected by smoke, prompting immediate evacuations. All tenants were safely evacuated, and crews immediately deployed hose lines to begin extinguishing the fire. However, the flames spread quickly through the ceiling and roof space, forcing firefighters to use aerial ladder trucks to apply water from above until ground crews could take over. Due to the intensity of the fire, the incident commander activated the mutual aid box alarm system (MABAS), calling for assistance from multiple neighboring fire departments. Over a dozen additional fire units arrived to support the operation, significantly increasing the number of personnel and equipment on scene. Thankfully, no civilians were injured, though one firefighter sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the operation and received medical attention. Fortunately, the adjacent apartment complex behind the building was never threatened by the fire. The fire was fully contained and extinguished within one hour of arrival, using multiple hose lines, four aerial apparatus, and 26 fire engines. Despite this, firefighters remained on site for more than three hours conducting thorough checks for any remaining hot spots or signs of rekindling. All 12 businesses in the shopping center are currently displaced while safety assessments and repairs are completed. The cause of the fire is still under investigation by local authorities. The Prospect Heights Fire Protection District urges residents and business owners to always have two escape routes, ensure smoke detectors are installed and functioning properly, and to develop an emergency plan in case of a fire or other disaster. Fire sprinkler systems can make a critical difference in preventing loss of life and property. If this building had been equipped with sprinklers, the fire may have been controlled before firefighters arrived or at least limited to its point of origin.
