The "Electronic Timing Swirl Spray Cylinder Oil Injection New Technology" developed by COSCO Group has been successfully implemented on a large-scale marine diesel engine, marking a significant advancement in cylinder lubrication systems. This innovative system replaces traditional mechanical timing methods with an electronic timing approach combined with rotating scavenging air flow, ensuring more precise and efficient oil distribution.
According to Chen Zhengjie, General Manager of the Safety Technology Supervision Department at COSCO Group, cylinder oil consumption accounts for approximately 73% of the operational costs of marine diesel engines. Reducing this consumption is a key strategy for improving ship efficiency. However, conventional systems have struggled to achieve substantial savings due to their technical limitations.
COSCO's new electronic timing swirl spray system precisely controls the timing of oil injection. The oil is sprayed into the cylinder and evenly distributed along the cylinder wall and piston rings through the vortex action of the scavenging air. This ensures optimal lubrication conditions, reduces cylinder wear, and significantly lowers oil consumption. According to real-world data from ships, this technology can save over 35% of cylinder oil, translating to annual cost savings of $100,000 to $200,000 per engine.
Field tests also show that the new system leads to more scientific and efficient oil usage. It prevents issues caused by excessive oil injection, such as engine failures and safety risks, while enhancing overall reliability. One test ship operated without a power-saving device for over a year, eliminating problems related to automatic speed reduction due to oil cutoffs. This improves the ship’s quasi-class rate and reduces maintenance workload, lowering both costs and crew workload.
Additionally, the new technology reduces the amount of oil scraped off from the cylinder, cutting oil consumption by about 20%. This lessens the burden and cost of oil treatment. It also decreases the emission of particulate matter, sulfur tetraoxide, and metal oxides in exhaust gases, which is beneficial for environmental protection and meeting ship performance standards.
According to official assessments, this system represents one of the most advanced technologies in marine diesel cylinder oil injection. It has already been applied to 26 vessels across five companies under COSCO Group. If implemented on 50% of COSCO’s fleet, it could save over 10,000 tons of cylinder oil annually, generating economic benefits exceeding 100 million yuan. With rising fuel prices, this technology has become a practical solution for energy savings and improved engine reliability.
Chen Zhengjie noted that this energy-saving technology is particularly suitable for large ships over 10,000 tons. Although the initial retrofit cost exceeds RMB 1 million, the investment can be recouped within two years.
