In 1973, he was appointed as Vice President in charge of R&D, and during this time, Cummins began leveraging his insights into the Chinese market. By 1981, the company started licensing engine production in China, and in 1995, it established its first Chinese joint venture. Today, Cummins operates over 20 institutions in China, including nine joint ventures, with eight of its 14 engine families produced locally. Another key figure in this story is Sun Xiaobo, the current General Manager of the East Asia R&D Center. Joining Cummins in 2004, Sun was previously the Director of Global Technology Planning and was seen as a rising star in the company after Lin Weiyi. With a doctorate from the University of Michigan and extensive experience in R&D, Sun has contributed to the development of world-class automotive models and engines, many of which are entirely owned by Chinese companies. Sun also worked as a chief scientist at Inco, focusing on alternative fuel technologies. His involvement in the BMW Brilliance project further highlights his strategic importance.
