It seems like the days of cramped offices and outdated facilities are coming to an end for DuPage Public Safety Communications (DU-COMM). The organization has outgrown its current space in Glendale Heights and is now set to move into a brand-new communications center. This state-of-the-art facility will be located at the former DuPage Juvenile Detention Facility on County Farm Road in Winfield, occupying 33,454 square feet of renovated and newly constructed space.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place on Monday, with construction expected to begin within the next few weeks and wrap up by fall 2018. The project includes renovations of the existing building and a 13,400-square-foot addition, designed to meet modern needs and safety standards.

This $15.87 million project is made possible through a partnership between DU-COMM, the county, and the DuPage Emergency Telephone System Board (ETSB). The ETSB is contributing $4 million, while DU-COMM is using $4.3 million from its reserves. The remaining $7.5 million is being financed by the county, which will be repaid over a 25-year lease agreement.

County board member Sean Noonan, who also serves as vice chairman of the public works committee, emphasized the durability and resilience of the new facility. “The part of the building that will house DU-COMM is going to be built to last,” he said. “It will be designed to withstand 250-mph winds, include additional lightning protection, and meet storm shelter construction standards.”

In addition to DU-COMM, the building already houses offices for the ETSB and the county’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. DU-COMM first moved to the county campus in 1975 before relocating to its current location in 1995. With this new space, the agency is taking a major step forward in ensuring efficient and reliable emergency communication services for the community.
