Palatine Rural FPD to sell ad space on apparatus

The *Daily Herald* recently published an article highlighting a new revenue initiative by the Palatine Rural Fire Protection District. The district is set to become the first in Illinois to sell advertising space on its fire trucks and ambulance, a move that could provide much-needed financial support as they face growing demands and shrinking property tax revenues. Just last week, the district lost a bid for a tax increase, which would have added $200,000 to their budget. With emergency calls rising and tax income declining, the ads are seen as a crucial alternative source of funding. “We’re kind of in a desperate situation here,” said Chief Hank Clemmensen. “The money from these ads will be critical to our operations, unfortunately.” Clemmensen emphasized that the advertisements will be tasteful and not overly flashy. He plans to place them on the sides near the rear of the district’s only fire truck and on the back of the lone ambulance. “It won’t look like a race car,” he said, adding that he will have final approval over all ad placements. The district is working with Arizona-based Public Safety Advertising, a company founded by a firefighter who aims to help departments boost revenue without increasing the burden on taxpayers. Clemmensen has been considering this approach for some time, as the district saw a $300,000 drop in revenue between 2012 and 2013—a 9% decline. Voters narrowly rejected the proposed tax hike, with just over 1,100 of the district’s nearly 20,000 registered voters casting ballots. About 54% voted against the measure. Even if the tax increase had passed, Clemmensen said he would have moved forward with the advertising plan, which was unanimously approved by the board in March. Public Safety Advertising estimates the district could earn between $20,000 and $25,000 annually from the ads. With the recent rejection of the tax hike, the need for this additional funding has only grown more urgent. This trend of fire departments using advertising to supplement their budgets is not unique to Illinois. Across the country, departments in places like Arizona, New York, and Maryland have also explored similar strategies to stay financially viable while continuing to serve their communities.
