The *Daily Herald* recently published an article highlighting a new and innovative revenue stream for the Palatine Rural Fire Protection District. The district is preparing to become the first in Illinois to sell advertising space on its fire trucks and ambulances. This move comes as the department faces financial challenges, especially after recently losing a bid for a tax increase. With rising emergency calls and declining property tax revenues, the funds from these ads are seen as crucial to maintaining operations.
Chief Hank Clemmensen described the situation as "desperate," emphasizing that the ad revenue will be essential for keeping the department running. He assured that the advertisements would be tasteful and not overly flashy. The ads will be placed on the sides near the rear of the district’s single fire truck and on the back of its only ambulance. “It won’t look like a race car,†he said, adding that he will have final approval over all designs.
The Palatine Rural FPD is partnering with Arizona-based Public Safety Advertising, a company founded by a firefighter who aims to help departments boost income without increasing the burden on taxpayers. Clemmensen has been considering this idea for some time, as the district has seen a significant drop in revenue. Between 2012 and 2013 alone, the district lost $300,000, a 9% decrease.
Last Tuesday, voters rejected a proposed tax hike that would have brought in an additional $200,000. Only about 1,100 of the district’s nearly 20,000 registered voters participated in the referendum, with around 54% voting against it. Even if the tax increase had passed, Clemmensen said he would have moved forward with the ad campaign, which was unanimously approved by the district board on March 10. Now, with the need for funding even greater, the plan has become more urgent.
According to Public Safety Advertising, the district could earn between $20,000 and $25,000 annually from the ads. This initiative reflects a growing trend across the U.S., where fire departments are turning to creative solutions to support their communities while managing shrinking budgets.
