Partial Discharge Testing Considerations for Transformers
Power transformers mainly use oil-paper barrier insulation, which consists of alternating layers of electrical paper and insulating oil. Due to the complex structure of large transformers, the insulation is very uneven. When improper design, resulting in high local field strength, poor process or external reasons, etc., cause internal defects, the partial discharge will inevitably occur in the transformer, and gradually develop, and finally cause damage to the transformer. Mainly in the following situations:
(1) Breakdown of the oil passage in the oil-paper barrier insulation in the middle of the winding;
(2) breakdown of the oil passage at the end of the winding;
(3) Break through the gap between the insulated wire and the electrical paper (lead insulation, lap insulation, and phase insulation).
(4) Breakdown of vertical insulating oil passages between coils of power transformers (turns, chambers);
(5) Discharge of branches, such as insulation board fences;
(6) Other solid insulation creepage;
(7) Discharges of other metal foreign substances that have penetrated into the insulation.
Therefore, for the transformers that have been delivered, there are several situations in which partial discharge tests are required:
(1) Before the new transformer is put into operation, conduct a partial discharge test to check if there is any insulation damage in the transportation and installation process after the transformer leaves the factory.
(2) Power transformer Partial discharge tests are performed on overhauled or modified transformers to determine the repaired insulation.
(3) Perform further qualitative diagnostics on transformers suspected of having an insulation fault during operation, such as gas-in-gas chromatographic analysis with discharge faults and other abnormalities involving insulation.
(4) As a preventive test item or on-line test content, monitor the insulation of the transformer during operation.
