In a significant move to address the dangers of highly toxic pesticides, Shaanxi Province is not only focusing on the destruction of existing stocks but also establishing a demonstration base for safer alternatives. According to a recent report from the Shaanxi Provincial Department of Agriculture, the province is actively promoting physical and biological control methods to significantly reduce pesticide use.
Since last year, the central government has banned the production, sale, and use of five highly toxic organophosphorus pesticides, including methamidophos, monocrotophos, parathion, methyl parathion, and phosphine amines. In response, local authorities in Shaanxi have intensified public awareness campaigns and conducted extensive market inspections. They have required pesticide dealers to maintain detailed records of high-risk products and have organized the retrieval, inventory, and disposal of existing stockpiles. As a result, 7.5 tons of highly toxic organophosphorus pesticides were seized across nine cities.
At the end of December last year, the Shaanxi Provincial Department of Agriculture officially destroyed these hazardous substances. To ensure that these toxic chemicals are no longer available on the market, a reporter recently visited Weinan City and found that most agricultural suppliers had no stock of such pesticides and refused to sell them. However, in some areas like Linyi District, Xinshi, and An Liu, it was still possible to purchase small quantities of methamidophos and parathion, albeit at higher prices.
A representative from the Shaanxi Provincial Institute of Pesticide Management described this as a "fish that escapes the net"—meaning that while the majority have been removed, a few may still slip through. Once identified, these products are immediately recovered.
Alongside the cleanup efforts, Shaanxi has also launched pilot projects in five counties and districts, covering over 1 million mu of farmland, to promote alternative pesticide options. The initiative aims to introduce a range of new, more efficient, low-toxicity, and low-residue pesticide varieties over the next three years, ensuring sustainable and safer agricultural practices.
