Here's a report from Eric Haak about the fire that broke out early Sunday morning (April 12) in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood.
At around 1:43 AM, the Main Fire Alarm Office received a Still & Box Alarm for a reported structure fire at 22nd and Wolcott Avenue, with people trapped inside. First-arriving units responded within one minute of the alarm being dispatched and immediately reported flames visible through the roof. By 1:45 AM, the 4th Battalion Chief requested an EMS Plan I and confirmed that the fire was burning on all three floors of the building.
At 1:51 AM, Engine 2-2-1 took control of the fire and shortly after ordered a 2-11 Alarm. Just before 2:00 AM, firefighters were pulled back from the structure, and a defensive firefighting strategy was implemented. Throughout the incident, multiple master streams were in operation alongside hand lines. Tower Ladder 5 and Engine 23’s deck gun were deployed in Sector A, while Squad 1A was positioned on Wolcott in Sector D.
By around 3:00 AM, the fire had extended into the cockloft on the B side of the adjacent building (see image 5). To manage the growing fire, Tower Ladder 39 was brought in as a fourth master stream. At the height of the operation, Engines 23, 18, and 39 were all pumping water at the scene. Fortunately, all 21 residents of the building managed to escape safely without any injuries.
Eric has shared several photos of the fire, including images of flames bursting through the roof, fire trucks responding at night, and Engine 23 in action. These visuals give a powerful glimpse into the intensity of the blaze and the efforts made by the Chicago Fire Department to contain it.
While some details may not be 100% accurate, this account reflects what appears to have occurred during the incident. It's a reminder of the dangers faced by firefighters and the importance of quick response and coordination in such emergencies.
