Here’s an account from Steve Redick, along with additional photos from Dan Shevlin:
About 0500 on Tuesday, January 7th, in the town of Norridge. It was well below freezing, with extremely cold temperatures. The fire occurred in a large home—almost like a mansion. I suspect it used modern lightweight construction methods, including truss systems and similar techniques. The fire was located on a small street that was only accessible from two directions. Firefighters faced heavy flames and reportedly had issues getting water, likely due to frozen hydrants.
Several people were reported missing or trapped when the fire department arrived. Search efforts were launched, but I believe all occupants were accounted for early in the operation. Despite this, the fire spread quickly and eventually consumed the entire structure. The building was later demolished during the day. They used a couple of handlines and the Leyden aerial pipe, and at some point, they called for a tanker from Prospect Heights to supply the Schiller Park tower. I had already left by then. Attached are some of the many images I captured.
