This message comes from Steve Redick:
I recently came across some old photos in my collection. I'm not entirely sure who provided them, but they might have been taken by Jack Connors. These images date back to July 6, 1970, and show a 5-11 and 1 special at 1748 N Ashland. The following day, Snorkel 7 was operating on the site when a wall collapsed, striking the basket and tragically killing Jack Walsh. Later, the area was turned into a park, but it fell into disrepair. As a result, the memorial marker was moved to Engine 55’s station, where it's now well maintained. These photos capture the full extent of the damage to the rig and give a powerful sense of how devastating this tragedy was.
Who is the “big buggy†standing next to Robert J. Quinn and the 1970s TV reporter? It looks like a fire chief or maybe a city official, but I can't quite place the vehicle. If anyone recognizes it, I'd love to hear from you!
