Chicago working fire, 12-25-13

This message is from Eric Haak:

Christmas morning was a hectic time for the fire companies in Chicago’s 18th Battalion, as they responded to two separate fires within hours of each other. The first fire broke out around 7:30 a.m. on the 6900 block of South Throop Street, and just under an hour later, another fire started less than a mile away on the 6500 block of South Marshfield. I arrived at the second scene about 25 minutes after the call came in, and thick smoke was still coming from the roof. The battalion chief quickly classified the incident as a box alarm, noting that the fire had started in the basement and was spreading to the first and second floors. The building was a 25 by 60-foot two-flat. Firefighters used four lines, all supplied by Engine 116, which was the only engine actively pumping water. The alarm was canceled at 11:05 a.m., and ten residents were temporarily displaced due to the fire.
