This message comes from Eric Haak:
Christmas morning was a hectic day for the fire companies in Chicago’s 18th Battalion, as they responded to two separate fires within hours of each other. The first fire broke out around 7:30 AM on the 6900 block of South Throop Street, and just under an hour later, another fire occurred less than a mile away on the 6500 block of South Marshfield. I arrived at the second scene about 25 minutes after the initial call, and thick smoke was still coming from the roof.
The battalion chief on scene quickly classified the fire as a "box alarm" and reported that the fire had started in the basement, spreading to the first floor and moving toward the second. The building was a 25 by 60-foot two-flat residence. Only Engine 116 was supplying water, and four lines were deployed to combat the flames. The box alarm was lifted at 11:05 AM. A total of ten residents were displaced due to the incident.
It's always tough to see people affected by such events, especially on a day like Christmas. The firefighters worked hard under challenging conditions, and it's clear how critical their quick response was in preventing further damage.
