China's phosphate and compound fertilizer industry has a large number of high-concentration producers, but compared to international competitors, the country lacks major enterprise groups with global competitiveness. Experts are warning about the risks of overdevelopment in this sector, particularly in high-density phosphate and compound fertilizers.
Wu Xiyan, president of the China Phosphate Fertilizer Industry Association, made these remarks during the national annual meeting of the phosphate fertilizer industry held in Guiyang. According to recent data, there are over 120 wet-process phosphoric acid plants operating in China, but most of them are small-scale enterprises. This indicates a fragmented industry structure that hinders the development of large, efficient players.
A joint research report by the China Phosphate Fertilizer Industry Association and the Ministry of Commerce highlights that domestic phosphate and compound fertilizers remain highly competitive in the local market due to favorable policies and the existing fertilizer management system. However, despite China being the world's largest producer of phosphate fertilizers, its overall international competitiveness ranks fifth, following the U.S., Morocco, Russia, and Tunisia.
Wu pointed out that the current layout of the industry is still unbalanced, with an overemphasis on high-concentration compound fertilizers leading to excessive investment and redundant construction. Statistics show that both existing production capacity and planned expansion under the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" have already exceeded agricultural demand. If not properly regulated, this could lead to intense and inefficient competition in the future.
The industry needs to focus on improving efficiency, reducing overcapacity, and enhancing long-term sustainability to build real global competitiveness. Without such measures, China may continue to lag behind leading international players in terms of innovation, cost control, and market influence.
