Recently, a significant breakthrough was achieved at Daqing Huake Co., Ltd.'s Polypropylene Plant No. 2. The intermittent main unit successfully completed the pilot testing of a polypropylene spherical catalyst developed by the Daqing Chemical Research Center. A total of 5.62 tons of polypropylene products were produced in batches, and all of them met the required quality standards. This marks a major step forward in reducing reliance on imported polypropylene catalysts.
Polypropylene catalysts are a critical component in the production of polypropylene, a widely used plastic material. For many years, China had to rely heavily on imported catalysts, which came with high costs and limited supply. Since 2004, the Daqing Chemical Research Center has been actively working on developing advanced polypropylene catalyst technologies, focusing on carrier preparation processes and the design of new electron donors. They have now successfully scaled up the process to a 5L carrier preparation and a 3L catalyst preparation level.
The experimental results have shown that the catalyst exhibits excellent performance, with high activity and polymer bulk density that meet industry specifications. The spherical catalyst also offers advantages such as stable process control, consistent active polymer release, low fines content, and higher bulk density. Additionally, due to its lower active metal content, it reduces the need for activators and external electron donors, leading to lower production costs and reduced polymer ash content.
With the current polypropylene production capacity of PetroChina Group exceeding 1.86 million tons per year, which accounts for 34.6% of the country's total production, the successful development of this domestic catalyst is a game-changer. It not only strengthens energy security but also supports the long-term sustainability and competitiveness of China's petrochemical industry.
