I’m sorry to share some difficult news. It feels surreal to write this, but Firefighter Micah “Bubba†Wakeman, who meant so much to our community, left us far too soon. Last Tuesday, Engine 6—the very rig he rode into action countless times—carried him home for the final time. Bubba was a 16-year veteran of the Decatur Fire Department, a devoted family man from Mount Pulaski, and someone who deeply loved farming. Tragically, he passed away in a tractor rollover accident on June 13th. He was only 43.
The outpouring of respect from his fellow firefighters across Central Illinois was overwhelming. As they stood guard outside the church, saluting their fallen colleague with solemn pride, the procession began. Led by squad cars—one from Decatur PD and another from the Macon County Sheriff’s Office—it moved slowly toward Warrensburg. Along the route, hundreds of first responders joined the tribute, forming a sea of emergency vehicles. At one point, an honor guard formed a ceremonial arch using two aerial ladders draped with an American flag, swaying gently in the breeze. Even though the day was bright and clear, it couldn’t mask the bittersweet emotions inside the church.
Tracy Dyer, a close friend of Bubba’s, summed it up perfectly: “This isn’t a funeral—it’s a celebration!†She spoke about his incredible reach, from missions in Uganda and Haiti to Guatemala and Ukraine, where his Christian faith drove him to help others. Beyond his global efforts, he also opened his home as a foster parent. Those who knew him described him as a selfless soul who always had time for others. There were moments of laughter when friends shared humorous anecdotes, but the weight of losing such a wonderful person was palpable. Tears streamed down faces as his 20-year-old daughter, Ashton, read a heartfelt letter expressing gratitude for having known her father.
The service ended with a poignant tradition—a single firefighter ringing a bell nine times, three sets of three rings, each representing a solemn goodbye. To ensure maximum attendance, firefighters from nearby cities like Springfield and Champaign volunteered to cover Decatur stations that day. In total, over 100 current and retired members of the Decatur FD were present to pay their respects.
As I sit here reflecting on everything, it hits me just how much one person can mean to so many. Bubba may no longer be with us physically, but his legacy will live on forever in the hearts of everyone whose lives he touched. Rest easy, hero.
