With the rapid growth of China's modern logistics industry, the commercial vehicle sector has seen significant market opportunities. At the same time, users are demanding higher performance, efficiency, and reliability from logistics vehicles. The challenge for manufacturers is to produce vehicles that meet the evolving needs of modern logistics. Recently, industry experts discussed the findings of the "2007 China Merchants Satisfaction Survey on Commercial Vehicles," shedding light on key issues between users and manufacturers.
Dai Dingyi, Vice President of the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing, highlighted seven major challenges identified in the survey. First, many logistics companies in China operate on a small scale, with an average of only 120 commercial vehicles per company. Only 42 companies had over 500 vehicles, representing just 1.6% of surveyed firms. Second, the industry lacks professional specialization—83% of companies offer multiple transportation services, but only 9.6% focus on specialized areas like port, hazardous goods, or large-scale transport.
Third, information about commercial vehicles is limited, leading to poor purchasing decisions. Most buyers rely on media, articles, or word-of-mouth, while only 6% received active product information from manufacturers. This lack of communication often leads to dissatisfaction after purchase. Fourth, safety concerns remain high, particularly regarding axle failures caused by overloading. Both manufacturers and users must work together to improve safety awareness.
Fifth, maintenance services are often unprofessional. Many logistics companies have in-house repair shops, but drivers tend to seek informal solutions when problems arise. In contrast, Volvo’s structured maintenance and service model offers a valuable example. Sixth, urban logistics vehicles face regulatory restrictions, making it difficult for companies to use suitable vehicles in cities. Many modify passenger cars, but this reduces efficiency.
Lastly, communication between users and manufacturers is weak. Small-scale users struggle to influence design and development, leading to a disconnect in meeting real-world needs. Shi Jianhua, Deputy Secretary-General of the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, emphasized that user feedback should drive commercial vehicle development. He suggested focusing on specialization, technology, and environmental sustainability.
From the user perspective, Mian Mian stressed the need for more tailored designs, such as lower floors and better load capacities for urban delivery. He also called for improved service models, learning from passenger car companies to enhance customer experience. Overall, the industry must adapt to user demands through innovation, better communication, and stronger support systems.
