Manufacturing informatization will move from integration to collaboration

On December 2, 2007, the IT Sub-forum of China's IT Industry Conference took place in Beijing. Over 100 participants, including government officials, industry experts, and CIOs from the manufacturing sector, gathered to discuss the theme of "comprehensive application and overall coordination." The event aimed to explore ways to enhance China’s manufacturing informatization by leveraging information technology for innovation, collaboration, and efficiency. The forum addressed key issues such as how IT can support lean design and drive independent innovation, how to foster collaboration across supply chains to boost efficiency, and how to use IT to promote green manufacturing amid growing environmental concerns. Renowned experts in the field of manufacturing informatization delivered insightful keynote speeches tailored to these pressing challenges. Professor Xiao Tianyuan, Director of the CIMS Center at Tsinghua University, emphasized the shift from integration to collaboration in the process of informatization. He argued that collaboration is not just a strategy but a critical driver for enhancing the competitiveness of the entire industrial chain and a fundamental trend in the future of manufacturing. His speech highlighted the importance of building interconnected systems that enable seamless communication and shared knowledge among stakeholders. It was noted that with the official launch of the "Eleventh Five-Year Manufacturing Information Technology Project," China’s manufacturing sector continued to experience rapid growth in 2007. According to a report by CCW Research, investments in domestic manufacturing informatization reached 38.7 billion yuan in 2007, marking a 16.97% increase compared to 2006. Despite this progress, China’s manufacturing industry still faces significant challenges, as products made in China have come under increasing scrutiny globally. A crisis of confidence has emerged, with product quality becoming a central concern for all stakeholders. Improving product quality is a complex and multifaceted task that involves every aspect of a company’s operations. To address this, Chinese manufacturers are under urgent pressure to adopt advanced information technologies to streamline management, enhance operational efficiency, and strengthen their capacity for independent innovation. Ultimately, the goal is to build lean, agile, and sustainable enterprises that can compete effectively on the global stage.
