Manufacturing informatization will move from integration to collaboration

On December 2, 2007, the IT Sub-forum of China's IT Industry Conference took place in Beijing, bringing together nearly 100 government officials, industry experts, and senior IT managers from manufacturing companies. The event focused on the theme of “comprehensive application and overall coordination,” with participants offering insights and recommendations to drive the informatization of China’s manufacturing sector forward. The forum addressed several key topics, including how manufacturing firms can leverage information technology to support lean design and foster independent innovation. It also explored the role of IT in enhancing collaboration across the supply chain, improving efficiency between upstream and downstream partners, and promoting green manufacturing through energy-saving and emission-reduction initiatives. Renowned experts in manufacturing informatization were invited to deliver targeted presentations, sharing their expertise on these critical issues. Professor Xiao Tianyuan, Director of the CIMS Center at Tsinghua University, delivered a keynote speech on “Informatization from Integration to Collaboration.” He emphasized that collaboration is not only a powerful tool for boosting the competitiveness of the entire industry chain but also a key trend in the evolution of manufacturing enterprises’ digital transformation. It is worth noting that with the official launch of the “Eleventh Five-Year Manufacturing Information Technology Project” in 2007, China’s manufacturing informatization continued to grow rapidly. According to a report by CCW Research, investments in domestic manufacturing informatization reached 38.7 billion yuan in 2007, marking a 16.97% increase compared to 2006. Despite this progress, China’s manufacturing industry still faces challenges, as products made in China have come under increasing scrutiny globally. This has led to a crisis of confidence and a growing emphasis on product quality. Improving product quality is a complex task that involves every aspect of a company’s operations. In response, Chinese manufacturing companies are under pressure to adopt advanced information technologies to enhance management practices, strengthen innovation capabilities, and ultimately build more efficient and sustainable enterprises.
