How Does Ozone Work?

1. The principle of ozone sterilization

Ozone (O3) is an allotrope of oxygen. It is a light blue gas with a distinct smell. Its molecular structure is triangular, with a bond angle of 116°, its density is 1.5 times that of oxygen, and its solubility in water is 10 times that of oxygen. Ozone is a strong oxidant, with a redox potential of 2.07V in water, second only to fluorine (2.5V). Its oxidation capacity is higher than chlorine (1.36V) and chlorine dioxide (1.5V), making it highly effective at destroying bacteria. Ozone quickly diffuses into the cell, oxidizing glucose oxidase inside the bacteria and also directly interacting with viruses and cells to destroy their DNA, RNA, and proteins. This process disrupts the bacterial cell membrane, leading to cell disintegration. Unlike hypochlorous acid, ozone’s bactericidal effect is not affected by pH or ammonia, and it is 600–3000 times more effective than chlorine. It can kill bacteria within 0.5–1 minute at concentrations of 0.3–2 mg/L.

1. Viruses
Ozone has a strong killing effect on viruses. For example, at a concentration of 0.05–0.45 mg/L, the Polio virus loses activity within 2 minutes.

2. Cysts
Cysts are completely removed at a concentration of 0.3 mg/L ozone for 2.4 minutes.

3. Spores
Spores are 10–15 times more resistant to ozone than growing bacteria due to their protective coat.

4. Fungi
Candida albicans and Penicillium can be killed.

5. Parasites
Schistosoma mansoni was killed after 3 minutes.

2. Ozone Deodorizes Water Bodies

Odor-generating substances during wastewater treatment mainly consist of carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur. Most are organic compounds like fatty acids, amines, aldehydes, ketones, and ethers. These substances have active groups that are easily oxidized by ozone, effectively removing odors. Ozone also prevents odor reformation by creating an oxygen-rich environment, which is beneficial for improving the sewage treatment environment in urban areas.

3. Decolorization of Water by Ozone

With increased attention to tap water sources and the reuse of secondary treated water, decolorization has become important. Ozone reduces water color to less than 1 degree after treatment. The presence of iron and manganese in water can cause discoloration, but ozone effectively removes these impurities. Additionally, ozone breaks down organic matter, preventing the formation of chromatic compounds and improving water quality.
