Pleasantview Fire District news

I just got off the phone with my brother-in-law, who called me with some heartbreaking news. It seems that Ed Switalski, the Fire Chief of Comstock Township in Michigan, tragically lost his life last night while on duty. I’ve known Ed for years—first through his time as a Battalion Chief with the Pleasantview Fire District in Illinois, and later when he took the helm at Comstock. He was a man who truly loved firefighting and dedicated over three decades to protecting others. According to reports, Ed was struck by a vehicle while working at a crash scene on I-94 near Kalamazoo. He was reportedly at the rear of his command vehicle, organizing equipment after assisting at the scene of an earlier incident. Despite the efforts of fellow firefighters and EMS personnel, Ed succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The circumstances surrounding the crash are still being investigated, but it's clear that this stretch of highway has seen far too many tragedies over the years. Ed wasn’t just a respected leader; he was also a beloved instructor and mentor to countless firefighters across Illinois, Michigan, and beyond. Many of us have fond memories of learning under him at training sessions or hearing stories of his courage during critical moments like the Line of Duty death of a fellow firefighter back in 1989, for which he received the Medal of Valor. His loss leaves a gaping hole not only in his family but also within the broader firefighting community. Hearing this news brought tears to my eyes. Ed leaves behind his wife Holly and their two daughters, Emily and Allison, who now face unimaginable grief. My thoughts are with them during this incredibly difficult time. To those who served alongside him in Comstock and Pleasantview, it feels like losing a part of our firefighting family. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced daily by first responders everywhere. Let’s honor Ed’s memory by continuing to advocate for safer working conditions and better protocols to protect our brave men and women in uniform. Rest easy, Chief Switalski—you will never be forgotten.
