Pleasantview Fire District news

I just heard such devastating news, and my heart is absolutely crushed. Comstock Township Fire Chief Ed Switalski was tragically killed last night while working at a crash scene on I-94 near Kalamazoo. From what I understand, Chief Switalski was standing at the rear of his command vehicle, helping to return equipment to service, when a vehicle lost control and struck him and the back of his vehicle. Despite the best efforts of his fellow firefighters and emergency responders, his injuries were just too severe, and he passed away at the scene. This stretch of I-94 has seen far too many tragedies over the years, and this loss hits so close to home for everyone in the firefighting community. Chief Switalski was a true legend—his dedication and courage spanned decades. He spent 24 years with the Pleasantview Fire District in Illinois before becoming Fire Chief in Comstock Township in 2013. He even received the Medal of Valor back in 1989 for his heroic actions during a previous line-of-duty fatality. Holly, Emily, and Allison—I can’t even begin to imagine what you’re going through right now. Please know that Chief Switalski’s memory will live on forever in the hearts of every firefighter he touched, including countless students and colleagues across Illinois, Michigan, and beyond. It breaks my heart to think of all the lives he saved and inspired over the years, including mine. I’ll never forget the stories I’ve heard about his sense of humor, his passion for teaching, and how deeply he cared for his fellow firefighters. He truly embodied everything we strive to be as first responders. Rest in peace, Chief Switalski—you will always be remembered and honored.
