BP recently deployed the REDA double electric submersible pump (ESP) unit from Schlumberger Oilfield Services at the Waqifam Oilfield in the UK. This innovative system is designed to significantly reduce the frequency of workovers by extending the operational lifespan of the ESP, which is a major breakthrough for maintaining efficiency in aging oil fields, especially in environmentally sensitive regions.
Considering the evolving reservoir conditions during oil recovery, the upper and lower ESPs have been engineered with distinct structural configurations. These designs take into account potential future conversion needs between the two pumps, ensuring flexibility and long-term adaptability. The lower ESP was initially installed with a 125-horsepower motor, while the upper ESP was equipped with an additional pump stage and a more powerful 150-horsepower motor to sustain the desired flow rate as water cut increased over time.
Moreover, advanced gas handling procedures are being implemented to manage the rising gas-oil ratio effectively. To maintain optimal production performance amid changing reservoir conditions, BP plans to shift operations to the upper ESP after approximately two and a half years.
The system can also be integrated with a 24-hour monitoring solution—the Phoenix Multi-Sensor I Meter—which continuously measures and optimizes key parameters such as pump inlet and discharge pressure, inlet temperature, motor winding temperature, vibration, and potential leakage. This real-time data helps ensure efficient and safe operation, supporting better decision-making and maintenance planning.
