The National Petroleum and Chemical Industry Quality Work Conference recently held in Xi’an outlined a strategic focus on promoting 94 Chinese brand-name products across 18 key industries. The goal is to develop 3 to 5 globally recognized Chinese brands with significant international influence. This initiative aims to elevate the global standing of China's petrochemical sector and enhance its competitiveness on the world stage.
According to Zhou Zhuye, secretary general of the association, as of last year, over 60 products from the industry had already earned the title of "China Famous Brand Products." However, this achievement still lags behind the rapid growth of the petrochemical industry. To address this gap, the association has launched the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" for brand development. Over the past five years, the plan has led to a growing number of high-quality Chinese brands emerging in the market. Each year, more than 10 products are evaluated for recognition as brand-name products.
Safety, environmental protection, energy efficiency, and the replacement of imported goods are central objectives for brand development in the next five years. These goals reflect a broader commitment to sustainable and innovative practices within the industry.
Zhou Zhuye emphasized that implementing a strong brand strategy has driven technological advancement and accelerated industry growth. It has also enhanced brand awareness, product quality, market share, and export volumes. For example, in the soda ash industry, there are now eight Chinese brand-name products. In 2002, China exported 1.14 million tons of soda ash, which increased to 1.68 million tons by last year.
Another success story comes from the diammonium phosphate sector. In 1998, China imported 5.495 million tons, meeting 85% of its agricultural demand. By 2004, domestic production accounted for 60% of the market, and exports continued to rise steadily.
In the paint industry, brand development has spurred industrial reorganization and improved company concentration. In 2005, eight companies with Chinese brand-name status produced nearly half of the total architectural coatings output in China for three consecutive years.
Meanwhile, in the lubricant sector, Sinopec and China Petroleum integrated their lubricant brands in 2004. According to the latest global ranking of the top 15 lubricants, Sinopec’s Great Wall Lubricant ranked fifth, following Shell, Exxon Mobil, BP, and Castrol. These achievements highlight the progress being made in building internationally competitive Chinese brands in the petrochemical industry.
