WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – On Wednesday, firefighters battling a blaze at J&R Used Tire Service in Hoopeston, Illinois, received an unexpected but valuable assist from Purdue University’s Fire Department and its robotic partner.
The call for help came early that morning when the Champaign Fire Department reached out to Purdue Fire Chief Kevin Ply, requesting support at the fire scene. What followed was not what they anticipated — a firefighting robot, developed as part of a research project, was deployed to help control the flames.
Ply explained that while some firefighters were initially doubtful, the robot quickly proved its worth. “Once we deployed it inside the structure, the other crews saw it in action and how effective it was against the fire,†he said. “It made a real difference.â€
Ply, along with two other Purdue firefighters, brought their prototype robot to the scene. They used it in an area where the fire had caused partial structural collapse, a spot too dangerous for human firefighters to enter.
Eric Dietz, a professor in Purdue’s College of Technology, is working on the robot for a Korean company. He described the real-world application as a major breakthrough. “This is exactly what researchers hope for — an operational test in the field,†Dietz said. “We got useful feedback that will help us improve the design.â€
The robot was used for nearly four hours, draining its battery completely. However, after returning to campus, the team noticed a software glitch that caused the water hose to activate without being commanded. “We’ll provide this feedback to the researchers so the next version can be even more reliable,†Ply added.
Dietz also mentioned that the collaboration has potential for economic growth. “The Koreans weren’t just interested in research; they were looking into how they could establish a company here,†he said.
Despite the success, there are still challenges to address, such as faster battery charging and the ability to replace batteries on-site. Both Ply and Dietz believe the experience was invaluable and marks an important step forward in the development of firefighting robotics.
