Gu Xiulian, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, outlined four key aspirations during the China Chemical Industry Leaders Forum on Energy Conservation and Emissions Reduction, hosted by the China Chemical Industry News Agency in Beijing from September 16 to 17. The event brought together leaders from 80 major oil and chemical companies, who shared insights on energy-saving practices and emission reduction strategies. Participants emphasized the critical role of the industry in driving national economic growth and pledged to leverage their influence to promote sustainable development and lead the way in energy efficiency and environmental protection.
Among the attendees were representatives from leading domestic firms such as Sinochem Group, Hubei Yihua, Yuntianhua, Juhua, and Double Star, as well as international corporations like BASF (China), LANXESS (Shanghai), Menehune (China), and Albemarle (Shanghai). They engaged in in-depth discussions on topics including management system improvements, product innovation, waste treatment, resource recycling, and technological advancement. The forum aimed to foster collaboration and accelerate the implementation of energy-saving and emission-reduction initiatives across the entire sector.
In her speech, Gu Xiulian highlighted that the growing public attention on energy conservation and emissions in the chemical industry is not only a challenge but also an opportunity for transformation. She called for a shift in development philosophy, urging the industry to move away from purely GDP-driven growth and instead focus on sustainable, environmentally responsible practices. She urged companies to optimize economic structures, invest in high-tech sectors, reduce overcapacity, and embrace energy-efficient technologies. She also stressed the importance of supporting small and medium enterprises through technical assistance and innovation.
Zhu Jinghua, Vice President of the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Association, and Hao Changjiang, President of China Chemical News, were present at the meeting. Representatives from various government agencies and research institutions, including the National Energy Research Institute, the Bureau of Industry and Commerce, and the Clean Development Mechanism R&D Center at Tsinghua University, provided insights on energy trends, macroeconomic conditions, and China’s climate change strategies. Additionally, the conference featured a CDM project promotion meeting and the third annual council meeting of China Chemical News.
