Park Ridge house fire 2-15-14

This is from Larry Shapiro:

A call came in to the Park Ridge Fire Department just before 10 a.m. on Saturday, February 15, 2014, reporting a house fire at 102 S. Chester. As units were en route, they spotted a header, and upon arrival at the corner of Chester and Garden, they found the back porch on fire with a worker suffering burn injuries. The incident was upgraded to a Code 4 due to the active fire. Engine 35 encountered a frozen hydrant at the corner, so firefighters had to hand-jack a hose from Tower 36 to a second hydrant half a block south.

Fire companies quickly brought the main fire under control but noted limited access to the second floor. The house was unoccupied at the time and appeared to be in the final stages of renovation. Emergency response included Park Ridge Engine 35, Tower 36, both Park Ridge ambulances, and Battalion 35. Additional support came from Rosemont and Niles with trucks, Morton Grove with a squad, Norwood Park and North Maine with engines, and ambulances from Lincolnwood and Elk Grove Village.

I arrived after the fire had been extinguished and have photos of the scene. The fire was confined to the rear porch, and it’s clear that the situation could have been worse if the house had been occupied. The frozen hydrant added an extra challenge for the responding crews, who had to work quickly to get water on the fire.
